Photographing the Brooklyn Bridge

I took these photos back in October of 2010. I was going to meet my wife downtown for dinner and a movie, and had some time to kill. It was a very windy and cloudy day, which made for some nice dramatic skies, so I thought I would take some shots from the Brooklyn Bridge. I was finding it hard to get any angles of the bridge that I hadn’t seen before, so I took a new approach… photos of people taking photos of the bridge.

It turned out to be a lot of fun. My favorite shot is #6. He looks like he is praying to the sky, but he’s actually looking taking a shot of the rigging. The other shot I really like is #10. The guy on the left saw the woman in red taking a picture with her slr, and decided she knew what she was doing and copied her shot. I had to laugh, because I’ve had people do the same thing when I was shooting with my slr.

One of the photo tips you read about often is to turn around and look behind you when taking photos of a sunset. Sometimes the best shots are not where you think they will be. In my case, they were standing next to me doing the same thing I was.

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome 2011

The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is opening it’s doors for 2011 on June 4th, with the first airshow on June 11. There is a photo contest being run by the Atlantic Flyer which is taking submissions until April 30th with the grand prize being VIP Access to the Aerodrome and an Air to Air photo flight.

There will also be a special “Artist, Authors and Photographers Weekend” held the weekend of Aug. 13th. I’m going to try to be there myself this year… maybe with a few prints for sale.

If you have never been to the O.R.A., I highly recommend you check it out. It’s flying history museum and a great place to spend the day with friends and family.

Cherry Blossoms at Brookdale Park

– Brookdale Park Cherry Blossom –

The wind and rain killed my chances of going to see the Branchbrook Park Cherry Blossom Festival this weekend. I did get to stop by Brookdale Park in Montclair which has about 4 Cherry trees in bloom. This was one of the better images, taken with the GF1 and 20mm. I used an ND filter so I could shoot with the lens at f/1.7 to get the nice shallow depth of field. I like the monotone pastel color and the contrast on either side of the blossom in focus.
